Electricity is a resource which can disappear any day now. This means that people in the US will have to adapt to the world without technology. This is something that might happen. It is considered one of the major threats to the US society.
The disappearance of electricity can be caused by an electromagnetic pulse attack. According to John McAfee, 90 percent of the population won’t survive two years in conditions without electricity. The numbers indicate that 270 million people would die within 24 months after the attack. Starvation, disease and societal breakdown would be the leading death causes.
These numbers were presented in The EMP Commission report from 2008. After these findings became accepted, Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States started working on the ways to protect electronic infrastructure.
However, it looks like nothing has been done to address this issue.
It seems that North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) decided to move back into Cheyenne Mountain because of an EMP threat. A fortification built in the mountain can endure such devastating EMP attack.
If an EMP attack happened, it would destroy military and civilian electronics nationwide.
It was believed that an EMP attack would be delivered by a nuclear explosion in the space. Nowadays, many countries are working on other ways to conduct an EMP attack. The US is one of them. The US has the technology to do this using Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range (JASSM).
Russia, China, Iran and North Korea are also among the countries which have their version of such weapon.
On the other hand, a massive solar storm can deliver the same devastating effects like an EMP attack. According to NASA, there are 12% chances of a massive solar storm within the next ten years. This solar storm would cause damage to grids across the world.
