The Platform-M combat robot was introduced for the first time during the demonstration of Russia’s armed forces in June 2014.
This robot looks a lot like a character from an animated movie Wall-E. But officially, this robot is described as a remote controlled robotic unit on a crawler.
There is also animated presentation of the Platform-M on the internet. This presentation shows how military with NATO weapons is easily diminished by robotic vehicles, which look a lot like the Platform-M.
Russian military stated that the Platform-M unit can perform tasks during the night and is armed with Kalashnikov rifle made in Izhevsk and four grenade launchers.
The Platform–M was developed at the Progress Scientific Research Technological Institute of Izhevsk. They have officially stated that the Platform-M can be used for gathering intelligence, for discovering and eliminating stationary and mobile targets, for firepower support, for patrolling and for guarding important sites. Targets can be destroyed by automatic or semiautomatic control systems and its weapons can be guided.
Russia’s robotic systems exist from 1964. The first state scientific and technological program devoted to the construction and employment of industrial robots started in 1973. This led Russia to have in its possession 40 percent of the world’s industrial robots.
Until this video emerged, it was believed that Russia did not have such advanced technology at their disposal.
