Hypersonic weapons are considered one of the most dangerous weapons of the modern world. Russia and China have already tested such weapons. On the other hand, the Pentagon is developing a technology that can be used in fight against hypersonic arms.
During a nuclear deterrence conference Adm. Cecil D. Haney, who is Stratcom’s senior leader, stated previous facts.
Stratcom serves as a protection against threats concerning nuclear weapons, war, strategic space systems and cyberspace.
One characteristic of a hypersonic weapon is the ability to continually alter its route. It has been noted that Russia has tested its Yu-71 hypersonic vehicle. These unsuccessful tests were conducted on February 26.
Russia plans to develop hypersonic missile program in order to breach the U.S. missile defenses. During the last five years, the hypersonic missile program was conducted under the secret program Project 4022.
It is estimated that 24 nuclear-capable Yu-71 vehicles may be manufactured by Russia between 2020 and 2025. Likewise, similar weapons are being developed by the US under the Prompt Global Strike program.
However, it seems that China has made significant progress in its program and seems to be the most successful. Wu-14 hypersonic glide vehicle has been tested four times. Such weapons will be used to carry nuclear weapons and as a conventional ballistic missile system. The purpose of such weapons is to sink the U.S. aircraft carriers away from Chinese shores.
When the US program is in question, both the US air force and the US Army have invested a lot in its programs. The US Air Force is developing a hypersonic glide delivery vehicle which could deploy conventional strike missile. The US Army is developing the advanced hypersonic weapon. Flight tests are scheduled for 2017 and 2020 and a total of $887.5 million will be spent during the next five years.
