Beekeepers in Germany requested a national ban on GMO

Almost 100,000 beekeepers in Germany requested a national ban on GMO.

Prior to this request, the EU has already issued a law which allows EU member states to choose not to use GM cultivation, even though they can.

Supporters of GMO are unhappy with this law. On the other hand, those who are against GMO have reported on a vast number of occasions that genetically modified food is dangerous.

Because the Minister of Agriculture has allowed every country to decide whether they are going to use GMO or not, beekeepers are expecting that a nationwide ban will be passed.

However, bees will be exposed to GM crops, because not all of the countries will ban it. Bees are even exposed to chemicals which were declared carcinogenic by the World Health Organization’s IARC.

It is unknown whether this ban is actually sustainable. Bans on the national level are difficult to justify legally.
