Spending a scorching summer day at the nearest swimming pool seems like the perfect summer day. Unfortunately, chlorinated water in pools contains dangerous cancer-causing chemicals.
The research revealed that there is a higher chance of developing a bladder cancer for those who swim in the chlorinated pools. The risk is shocking 57%.
In addition to this, the risk of cancer is even greater after the cancer-causing components of chlorine are absorbed through the skin or lungs.
The study was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. It was performed by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and it revealed that chemicals found in the swimming pool are harmful to a person’s health. The danger is present even if the substance is inhaled, ingested or even absorbed through the skin for the duration of typical swimming activity.
The study examined all causes of bladder cancer including water consumption and other water-related activities. The results were based on the data obtained from 1,219 cases and 1,271 controls between 1998 and 2001.
The presence of disinfectant byproducts increases the risk of bladder cancer by 57%. The most common carcinogenic substance is trihalomethane or THM. The harmful effect is serious because the liver cannot prevent the absorption of this chemical through inhalation, ingestion or skin exposure.
There are numerous other risks linked to chlorinated water. It was concluded that chlorinated water can cause greater risk of skin cancers. The risk of this is higher after long exposure to pool chemicals after a long period of time.
It also increases the risk of colorectal cancer as it is common occurrence after being overexposed to chlorinated water.
Other studies also shed light onto dangers of chlorine and its byproducts. Breathing problems caused by exposure to chlorine-based pool chemicals at the rate of 2-4 ppm were showed in a study at the American College of Sports Medicine.
Another study discovered that children are at a six time higher risk of developing asthma after being exposed to chlorinated pool water. The study was published in the journal Pediatrics.
Center for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed that constant contact with chlorine may be linked to asthma as well as other respiratory diseases, including epiglottitis.
Other diseases caused by contact with chlorinated pool water include eye infection, kidney problems are caused by swallowing, while other substances found in water increase the risk of liver cancer.
Researchers suggest that the swimming pool with chlorine at a low concentration of 0.5 ppm is the safest choice since thy studies found that this amount is not dangerous for your health.
It is also advised to take a shower each time you get out of a swimming pool.
