Health advocacy group discovered that crayons and children’s toys sold in the US contain asbestos fibers. The EWG Action Fund wants to prohibit asbestos in consumer products.
Asbestos was discovered in four out of 28 brands of crayons. Also, some of them contain carcinogenic substances. Products in question can be bought online on ToysRUs.com and Amazon.com.
According to Sonya Lunder, co-author of this report, all products which contain asbestos were manufactured in China.
If asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can cause serious health problems such as lung disease, mesothelioma and other types of cancer. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, contact with asbestos is only hazardous when asbestos is in the air. These fibers can be easily inhaled and can’t be observed by the human eye.
It has been reported that a spokeswoman for Toys ‘R’ Us stated that safety is most important. They have initiated an investigation to see whether supplier test reports and the referenced report comply with their strict safety standards.
In the past, asbestos was used as insulation material in buildings. Today, many developed nations have prohibited the use of asbestos due to its carcinogenic properties.
The amount of asbestos has not been disclosed in the report of The EWG Action Fund.
