World’s famous researcher George Kourounis became the first person who descended into a fiery crater, known as the “Door to Hell”.
This Canadian was a member of the first expedition to the fiery pit in a distant part of Turkmenistan.
Crater, which is officially called Darvaza, has been burning for more than 40 years, since the accident when Soviet scientists set it to fire trying to burn the excess gases.
It is about 30 meters deep, and the temperatures are exceeding 1000oC.
When Mr. Kourounis from Toronto found out that the government of Turkmenistan wants to put out the fire, he decided to visit this unbelievable location.
In the past, he participated in volcano expeditions, but this was an additional challenge for him.
With special equipment and dressed in a special suite, the team descended him into the crater where he could spend only 15 minutes because of the heat.
„We had a lot of doubts because no one else has done this before. How hot exactly was at the bottom of the sinkhole? Will the ropes, I am attached to, withstand? What if something goes wrong?”
„I didn’t know what to expect, but when I finally stepped on the bottom of the crater, I was overwhelmed by some unbelievable feeling because I knew I was standing on the place where no one else had stepped before“, said Kourounis.
