Catalonia has started the process of secession. The resolution, which enables Catalonia to do so, was passed in Parliament.
The region will establish full independence by 2017. Seventy two votes in Parliament were in support of this decision.
The proposition to secede Catalonia from Spain came from Catalan pro-independence parties. This resolution is supported by Catalan Junts pel Si (Together for Yes) and Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) parties.
Under the passed resolution, Catalan region has legal right to establish an independent and sovereign Catalan state.
Even though the resolution was passed in favor of the future state of Catalonia, Spain’s government will submit an appeal to the Constitutional Court.
According to Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, independence referendums are not in line with the constitution and will be considered unlawful.
