Russian military drills in Kyrgyzstan

This week 250 Russian paratroopers arrived in Kyrgyzstan in order to perform military drills together with servicemen of Kyrgyzstan’s National Guard in the Kyrgyz Mountains.

The exercises will last until June 5 and it will take place on the territory of the fifth brigade of Kyrgyzstan’s National Guard, as well as on the Russian air base in Kant.

An official confirmed that the soldiers will perform the landing operation and participate in skill training in the mountainous areas.

This joint military exercise was scheduled a month ago by military chiefs of these two states.

The Russian air base in Kant was built in 2003, and it is situated 20 km from the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek. It is used by the Collective Rapid Reaction Force of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

Aircrafts that are based in this base include Su-25 attack aircraft, Il-76 transport aircraft and helicopters of the 5th Urals Army of the Air Force and Air Defense.

Previous joint military exercises, involving over 155,000 soldiers from the forces of the Central and Eastern districts, Airborne Forces, Air Defense, Long-Range Aviation and Military and Transport aviation, were held last year in September.
