A group of hackers revealed how staff members of Defense Ministry are sharing top secrets by using public email services. The head of military counterintelligence at the Russia’s Federal Security Service received a letter with a more detailed explanation of this matter.
This type of negligence is viewed as criminal negligence. Members of Shaltay Boltay hacking group discovered that ministry staff members are using Yandex, Mail.ru and Gmail to send unencrypted official documents, which hold sensitive data about Russia’s defense capabilities.
They also found passwords to Defense Ministry mail servers among the correspondence.
Shaltay Boltay also emphasized that such information could have been available to many other intelligence services of some interested countries, as a result of negligence of employees.
At the moment, the data is put on sale. However, military counterintelligence can even purchase it with a 50 percent discount.
Dmitry Peskov, a Russian presidential press-secretary, stated that the use of public email services is not a proper option when sensitive information is in question. He considers it completely unacceptable.
Everything stated by hackers will be thoroughly checked.
