Gorbachev suggested Russia and Germany should improve their relations

Mikhail Gorbachev

According to Mikhail Gorbachev who is a former president of the Soviet Union, Russia and Germany only receive immense benefits if they cooperate.

As these two countries possess powerful capital, he believes that the whole Europe benefits if they cooperate.

He addressed achievements of both countries after the WWII.

He also said that Russia and Germany especially have to invest into their good relations in these difficult times.

Mikhail Gorbachev was involved in the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990. This holiday is celebrated on October 3 as the Day of German Unity.

Because Gorbachev was involved in signing the treaty of German unification, many people in Russia believe that Russia did not receive adequate compensation for the effort.

Those who criticize him for this even organized a parliamentary resolution in 2015, which purpose was to condemn German reunification as an act of aggression.

Gorbachev’s response to this was that something done in the past cannot be judged from the current point of view.

He even wants to tone down current tension between Russia and the US because he believes that the current state of affairs can only lead to something very similar to the Cold War.
