China and Russia have joined forces to create a new jumbo jet. This Sino-Russian jumbo jet will be able to transport up to 280 passengers. The C929 design will be completed by July. The first flight for this new aircraft is planned between 2021 and 2022.
It will be configured to host 3 classes of passengers and its range will be 12,000km.
The cost of this new development amounts to $13 billion and Russia already has high hopes for it. The prototype blueprints are expected between 2016 and 2018.
Russian company Slyusar is going to develop the composite wing and tail of the C929, while China is responsible for fuselage construction.
The weight of this aircraft will be about 250 tons which is similar to Boeing 787 or Airbus 350. The C929s will firstly offer a lower cost alternative for airlines around the world.
On the other hand, a militarized C929 could function as a refueling tanker to Chinese bombers and stealth fighters. It could also serve as an aircraft carrying Chinese leaders.
