Syrian President Assad decided to address the US involvement in the Syrian war. According to him, the US has hidden agenda to save the US empire.
Following a delivery of Russian S-300 air defense missile launchers to Syria on Tuesday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stated on Wednesday the United States is meddling in other countries’ business in an attempt to “save what is left” of its diminishing global empire.
“Today,” the president said to Iranian magazine Tehran Foreign Policy Studies Quarterly, “the United States are waging wars with the only goal to cement its project of total control by launching attack on everyone, who opposes its dominance.”
He added: “What is happening in Syria is an attempt to save what is left from the American and western hegemony in the world.”
Assad’s comments come as Moscow just delivered a battery of S-300 missile launchers to Syria, with the purported sole purpose being to defend a Russian naval base and its warships.
“Indeed, the Syrian Arab Republic received an S-300 anti-aircraft missile system,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told the media. “The system is designed to ensure the safety of the naval base in [the Syrian city of] Tartus and ships located in the coastal area [in Syria].”
The spokesman made the point of noting: “The S-300 is purely a defensive system and poses no threat.”
For those looking to paint Russia as the aggressor in Syria, reports of the missile system’s deployment were welcome. Writes Fox News:
“Russia has deployed an advanced anti-missile system to Syria for the first time, three US officials tell Fox News, the latest indication that Moscow continues to ramp up its military operations in Syria in support President Bashar al-Assad.
“It comes as Russia’s actions led to the collapse of a cease-fire and the cut-off of direct talks to the U.S.
“While Moscow’s motives are not certain, officials say the new weapon system could potentially counter any American cruise missile attack in Syria.”
But as some push for a hot war with Russia, others — including a group of former U.S. intelligence officials — are calling for cooler heads to prevail in the standoff with Moscow over the Syrian conflict.
Over the weekend, for instance, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned: “If the US launches a direct aggression against Damascus and the Syrian army, it would cause a terrible, tectonic shift not only in the country, but in the entire region.”
Citing that warning, the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity issued an alert to President Obama, suggesting that “limiting your circle of advisors to a small, relatively inexperienced coterie with a dubious record for wisdom can prove disastrous.”
Further advising Obama not to rely on mainstream media sources for guidance, the group concluded:
“Therefore, we strongly recommend that you invite President Putin to meet with you in a mutually convenient place, in order to try and sort things out and prevent still worse for the people of Syria.”
