Videos of UFOs captured back in the 1991 remain unsolved mysteries. Apparently, NASA never explained this occurrence.
The video recordings above Earth’s atmosphere have baffled experts despite being recorded more than 24 years ago.
Arjun Walia, a writer on space phenomena, has been looking at the various studies.
He said: “In the video, you will see approximately a dozen objects moving in a peculiar fashion.
“The most fascinating part occurs when one object, at a point near the horizon, is heading towards Earth and, as a flash occurs at the 33 second mark, another object moves rapidly across the field of view, and the object heading towards Earth shoots off into outer space at high speed.
“The fact that the entire world saw this footage meant that some sort of explanation had to be given, as the film attracted a great deal of attention, and rightfully so. It is difficult to dismiss seeing strange glowing objects floating around and then sharply changing direction.”
In the years since the recording several scientific papers have been published exploring the event, with theories ranging from wormholes – a theoretical mysterious portal to another part of the universe – to ice particles.
Dr. Jack Kasher, Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Nebraska, said in his analysis it pointed to proof of wormholes: ““There is another way, whether it’s wormholes or warping space, there’s got to be a way to generate energy so that you can pull it out of the vacuum, and the fact that they’re here shows us that they found a way.”
Dr. Mark J. Carlotto published a paper in New Frontiers Science describing the objects as “one of the most unusual phenomena observed to date by the (space) shuttle.”
He described “two slow moving circular objects,” “a number of fast moving objects in space near the shuttle,” and a “strange luminous apparition near the earth’s surface.”
He said: “The two slow moving circular objects have attracted a great deal of popular interest due to their disk-like shape.”
James Oberg, an American space journalist and historian, came up with the most straight-forward and non paranormal explanation.
He believed that the movements were the result of the shuttle’s thruster firing and disrupting ice particles.
Mr Carlotto and Lan Fleming, who published his own report in New Frontiers Science, refuted the ice theory, claiming the data did not back it up.
Mr Carlotto concluded the objects travelled in circular arcs, and were very far from the shuttle moving at high speed.
Further analysis by Dr Jack Kasher also found the movements shown could not be ice particles.
Mr Walia said: “This is pretty bizarre and shocking footage that really has no solid explanation.
“If we look at all of the evidence surrounding the UFO phenomenon and the extra-terrestrial hypothesis as a possible explanation, this really does become difficult to dismiss as a conspiracy theory.”
So who’s right?
It seems we may never be sure with this one.
But we do know a number of former NASA astronauts have come forward to claim to have seen UFOs, or even that aliens do visit Earth.
Dr Brian O’Leary, former NASA astronaut and Princeton physics professor, once said: “There is abundant evidence that we are being contacted, that civilisations have been visiting us for a very long time.”
Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, has often said: “I happen to be privileged enough to be in on the fact that we have been visited on this planet, and the UFO phenomenon is real.”
And former NASA astronaut Gordon Cooper famously said: “There are a number of extra-terrestrial vehicles out there cruising around.”
