Our planet is in danger of a super massive black hole that is located near our planet. The existence of this super massive black hole imposes a real danger to the life on our planet.
Within minutes the supermassive black hole could obliterate all life on Earth, and scientists have no idea when it could happen, experts claim.
The huge black hole is bloating to gigantic proportions inside galaxy NGC 1277 in the constellation of Perseus – an estimated 1475 light-years from Earth.
Experts believe supermassive black holes are formed at the same time as their host galaxy when clouds of gas merge following the collapse of stars.
This collapse is said to cause a huge explosion, sending long gamma rays – or GRBs –shooting off through the universe.
If a GRB were to strike earth, our protective ozone layer – which blocks harmful rays – would be wiped out, exposing all life forms to deadly radiation.
A video on popular science YouTube channel Kurzgesagt – which has racked up almost 150 million views for its videos – explains the process.
The narrator of the video said: “Even a more distant GRB could still end life on Earth and it wouldn’t need to score a head-shot to kill us.
“If originating from a few thousand light years away, it would be a hundred light years wide by the time it reaches us, washing over the solar system like a tidal wave.”
Black holes usually occupy around 0.1% of its host galaxy, whereas this beast takes up a whopping 14%.
Initial research estimated the black hole to be 11 times as wide as the orbit of Neptune around the sun.
Now that size has been corroborated by scientist Remco van den Bosch, who led a second year-long study into the black hole, HNGN reports.
Contrary to popular belief, black holes do not float around space gobbling up stars, moons and planets.
According to NASA’s website: “Earth will not fall into a black hole because no black hole is close enough to the solar system for Earth to do that.
“Even if a black hole the same mass as the sun were to take the place of the sun, Earth still would not fall in.
“The black hole would have the same gravity as the sun. Earth and the other planets would orbit the black hole as they orbit the sun now.”
